How to Do Battery Arbitrage in Scotland
Install a compatible home battery
Install an arbitrage-compatible battery such as Duracell Dura5 or GivEnergy AIO. Scottish Energy Efficiency installs both. Call 0141 230 0198 for a free survey.
Switch to Octopus Agile electricity tariff
Sign up for Octopus Agile (or Intelligent Flux for automated charging). This gives you access to half-hourly variable rates throughout the day.
Connect your battery to GivEnergy Cloud or Octopus dispatch
Log in to GivEnergy Cloud app and connect your Agile tariff. Enable automatic Agile-linked charging. This takes approximately 20 minutes.
Check today's Agile prices
View today's 48 half-hourly price slots at bestsegrates.com/agile-live or the Octopus app. Identify the cheapest 2-hour charging window.
Set your charge schedule
Configure your battery to charge during the 2 cheapest consecutive hours. For manual control, set this in the GivEnergy or Solis app the evening before.
Identify the peak export or usage window
The most expensive slots are typically 16:00–19:00 in winter. This is when your battery should be discharging — either powering your home or exporting at peak SEG rates.
Set your discharge schedule
Configure battery discharge to coincide with the peak window. Automated systems (GivEnergy Cloud + Agile) do this automatically once connected.
Monitor your daily performance
Check the GivEnergy app daily to see charge/discharge cycles, grid import cost, and export income. Compare to the daily spread calculator at batteryarbitrage.co.uk.
Review and optimise monthly
Review monthly profit vs estimated. In summer, smaller spreads mean fewer arbitrage opportunities — prioritise solar self-consumption. In winter, larger spreads maximise arbitrage.
